Coin lockers and luggage storage at JR Ueno Station

JR Ueno Station is located in Taito-ku, Tokyo.

It is served by the Hokkaido, Tohoku, Joetsu, Akita, Yamagata, and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines, as well as the Yamanote, Keihin Tohoku, Utsunomiya (Tohoku Main Line), Takasaki, Joban, and Ueno Tokyo lines.

It used to be called “the northern gateway to Tokyo,” but the number of trains arriving at and departing from Ueno Station has been drastically reduced since the Shinkansen and Ueno Tokyo Lines now directly connect to Tokyo Station. However, the direct connection of the Shinkansen and Ueno Tokyo Lines to Tokyo Station has greatly reduced the number of trains arriving at and departing from Ueno Station.

The area around the station, including Ueno Park and Ameya Yokocho, is a fun area to stroll around.

There are a total of 13 coin lockers at JR Ueno Station.

There are a total of 13 coin lockers at JR Ueno Station: 7 inside the ticket gates and 6 outside the ticket gates.

Some locations may or may not be marked, so keep in mind the approximate location by yourself.

【Inside ticket gates】Inside the central ticket gates on the 1st floor [Central ticket gates 76].

Coin lockers are located on the right side of the 1st floor central ticket gate, next to the reserved-seat ticket vending machine.

• 500 yen medium: 6 pieces
• 700 yen large: 6 pieces

There are large coin lockers, so large suitcases may be placed in them.

In addition to coins, thousand-yen bills and transportation system IC cards except PiTaPa are accepted as payment methods.

【Inside ticket gates】Inside the central ticket gates on the 1st floor [Central ticket gates 74 and 75] (by the 17th line)

There are also coin lockers on the other side of the aisle where the coin lockers are located in the central ticket gate on the 1st floor [Central ticket gate 76].

• 500 yen medium: 17 pieces
• 700 yen large: 17 pieces

There are large coin lockers here as well. Even large suitcases seem to be safe.

In addition to coins, thousand-yen bills and transportation system IC cards except PiTaPa are accepted as payment methods.

This locker is named “by the 17th line”.

【Inside ticket gates】Inside the central ticket gates on the 1st floor [Central ticket gates 71-73].

Go further inside the coin lockers located in the central ticket gate on the 1st floor [central ticket gates 74 and 75] (by platform 17), and you will see an escalator going up to the 3rd floor on your right.

There is another coin locker on the left side of the escalator.

Coin lockers at the [Central Gate 73] facing the front of the corridor can be paid for with thousand-yen bills and transportation system IC cards in addition to coins.

The coin lockers at the [central ticket gates 71 and 72] along the railroad tracks can only be paid for with a transportation system IC card except for PiTaPa.

The four small, four medium, and four large lockers in blue are reservation-only lockers called “To Locca,” which have a different fee structure. (We will introduce them in detail in another section later.

【Inside ticket gates】Inside the central ticket gates on the mezzanine floor .

Coin lockers are located on the mezzanine floor up the escalator and stairs to the left of the central ticket gate.

• 400 yen small: 8 pieces
• 500 yen medium: 7 pieces
• 700 yen large: 7 pieces

There are large coin lockers here as well, so large suitcases may be stored.

【Inside ticket gates】Inside the Shinobazu Exit connecting passageway on the mezzanine floor [Shinobu 40, 41].

Go further back from the coin lockers in the central ticket gate on the mezzanine floor [Mezzanine 1], and the passage turns left into a passage with a slightly low ceiling. This is the “Shinobazu-guchi” passageway, and coin lockers are located in this passageway as well.

• 400 yen small: 20 (10 of which are dedicated to transportation system IC cards)
• 500 yen medium: 18 (9 of which are for use with a special transportation system IC card)
• 700 yen large: 18 (9 of which are for exclusive use with a transportation system IC card)

There are large coin lockers here as well, which may hold large suitcases.

The white coin locker on the left accepts coins, 1,000 yen bills, and transportation system IC cards except PiTaPa, while the yellow-green coin locker on the right accepts only transportation system IC cards except PiTaPa.

【Inside ticket gates】Inside Shinobazu Exit on the mezzanine floor [Shinobazu 36, 37]

There are also coin lockers on the other side of the coin lockers on the mezzanine floor in the Shinobazu Exit connecting corridor [Shinobazu 40 and 41].

• 400 yen small: 7 pieces
• 500 yen medium: 32 pieces
• 700 yen large: 5 pieces

In addition to coins, transportation system IC cards (except PiTaPa) can be used for payment.

The four blue lockers in [Shinobu 36] are called “To Locca,” which are reservation-only lockers with a different fee structure. The fee structure is different and will be introduced in detail in another section later.

【Inside ticket gates】3F Park ticket gates [Public 1~9].

There are also coin lockers in the corridor on the right immediately after entering the park ticket gate facing Ueno Park on the west side.

The Park ticket gate and the Central and Shinobazu ticket gates can be accessed via the platform or by using the escalator next to the coin lockers in the Central ticket gate on the first floor [Central ticket gates 71-73].

Coin lockers in [Public 1][Public 2] are time-based.

• Small: 42 pieces at 200 yen for up to 3 hours (400 yen for every 24 hours thereafter)
• Medium: 24 pieces at 300 yen for up to 3 hours (500 yen for every 24 hours thereafter)

In addition to coins, transportation system IC cards (except PiTaPa) can be used for payment.

Coin lockers in [public 3] to [public 9] are charged as before.

• 400 yen small: 123 (10 of which are dedicated to transportation system IC cards)
• 500 yen medium: 52 (8 of which are for use with a special transportation system IC card)
• 700 yen large: 32 (24 of which are for exclusive use with a transportation system IC card)

In addition to coins, transportation system IC cards (except PiTaPa) can be used for payment. The coin lockers at [Public Hall 4] and [Public Hall 7] are for the exclusive use of transportation system IC cards.

【Inside ticket gates】Inside underground passageway[Basement 1-3]

Here are the coin lockers outside the ticket gates.

These coin lockers are located in the underground passageway on the north side of Tokyo Metro Ueno Station, between entrances 7 and 8. Although the Tokyo Metro could manage these coin lockers, JR East coin lockers are located here.

• 400 yen small: 23 (16 of which are dedicated to transportation system IC cards)
• 500 yen medium: 20 (14 of which are for use with a special transportation system IC card)
• 700 yen large: 20 (14 of which are for exclusive use with a transportation system IC card)

Coin lockers in the yellow-green [B2] accept coins and transportation system IC cards except PiTaPa. The coin lockers in the other [B1] and [B3] are for transportation system IC cards only, excluding PiTaPa.

The three small, three medium, and three large lockers in the blue section of B1 are reservation-only lockers called “To Locca,” which have a different fee structure. The fee structure is different and will be introduced in detail in another section later.

To get to the coin lockers in the basement, use the escalator at Atrei East in the Grand Concourse of the Central Gate.

There is a sign for “coin lockers” on the stairs of Atre in front of the Asakusa Exit, but the stairs are a little far away, so use the escalator.

【Outside the ticket gates】 Asakusa Exit Locker Room [A-O] (outside the central ticket gate on the 1st floor)

A coin locker room with approximately 350 coin lockers, the largest in JR Ueno Station, is located at the Asakusa Exit just south of the central ticket gate on the first floor.

There are also large, wide lockers and extra-large lockers.

• 400 yen small: 130 pieces (2 of which are dedicated to transportation system IC cards)
• 500 yen medium: 112 pieces (27 of which are for exclusive use with a transportation system IC card)
• 700 yen large: 95 pieces
• 700 yen large (wide width): 10 pieces (all dedicated to transportation system IC cards)
• 1,000 yen extra-large: 10 pieces (all of them are for transportation system IC cards only)

In addition to coins, transportation system IC cards (except PiTaPa) can be used for payment.

Among [A] to [O], [E], [I], and [N] are for transportation system IC cards only, and [K] is “To Locca” for reservations only.

【Outside ticket gates】Mezzanine floor outside Shinobazu ticket gates [Shinobu 45, J42 Shinobu, Shinobu 46] (outside Shinobazu ticket gates)

There are also coin lockers in front of the Shinobazu ticket gate on the mezzanine floor.

Here, coin-only lockers and time-based lockers are also available.

• 400 yen small: 41 pieces
• 500 yen medium: 6 pieces

In addition to coins, this coin locker accepts thousand-yen bills and transportation system IC cards except PiTaPa.

• 400 yen small: 2 (all coins only)
• 500 yen medium: 2 (all coins only)
• 700 yen large: 2 (all coins only)
• 200 yen for up to 3 hours (400 yen for every 24 hours thereafter): 8 small coins
• 300 yen for up to 3 hours (500 yen every 24 hours thereafter): 7 medium-sized coins
• 500 yen for up to 3 hours (700 yen for every 24 hours thereafter): 7 medium-sized items

The dark gray coin lockers on the left are for coins only and are charged as usual. The coin lockers on the right are time-based and accept not only coins but also 1,000 yen bills and transportation system IC cards except PiTaPa.

Large coin lockers are also available, so large suitcases can be checked in. Although there are only a few, it is nice to be able to choose which locker to use depending on the time of use.

【Outside ticket gates】2nd floor Iriya corridor [J69 Shinobu].

The passageway connecting the Iriya Exit on the northeast side of JR Ueno Station and the Higashi Ueno Exit on the southeast second floor is called the Iriya Passage.

Coin lockers are located at the stairs and escalators from this Iriya Passage to the Iriya ticket gate on the third floor.

• 400 yen small: 24 pieces (top right cannot be used)
• 700 yen large: 8 pieces

There is a large coin locker, so you could put a large suitcase in it.

These coin lockers are for coins only.

There are no exchange machines nearby, so please prepare small change in advance, or use the coin lockers in front of the Iriya ticket gate on the 3rd floor, just up the escalator, which also accepts 1,000-yen bills.

【Outside the ticket gate】3th floor in front of Iriya ticket gate

Opposite the park ticket gates, on the southeast side of the third floor, is the Iriya ticket gate. Coin lockers are located in front of the ticket gate.

• 300 yen very small: 5 pieces
• 400 yen small: 18 pieces
• 500 yen medium: 5 pieces
• 700 yen large: 2 pieces

There are large coin lockers here as well, so you may be able to put in a large suitcase. There is also a very small coin locker here, about the size of a small coin locker divided vertically into three equal sections.

You can pay in coins, thousand-yen bills, and transportation system IC cards except PiTaPa.

If the coin lockers on the 2nd floor Iriya Passage [J69 Shinobu] are for coins only and you do not have coins, you can use these coin lockers located at the top of the escalator.

【Outside the ticket gates】3th floor Pandabashi Exit

There is another coin locker near the Iriya ticket gate, at the Pandabashi exit.

• 400 yen small: 16 pieces
• 700 yen large: 4 pieces

There are large coin lockers, so large suitcases may be placed in them.

In addition to coins, thousand-yen bills and transportation system IC cards except PiTaPa are accepted as payment methods.

You can also reserve coin lockers and check their availability.

Blue coin lockers are located inside the central ticket gate on the first floor [Chuo Kaimen 71], inside the Shinobazu Exit connecting passageway on the mezzanine floor [Shinobazu 36], and outside the ticket gates in the underground passageway [B1], and in the Asakusa Exit locker room [K] outside the central ticket gate on the first floor.

These are called “To Locca” lockers, which can be reserved from your smartphone.

• S size (small): 100 yen per hour (maximum charge of 1,000 yen per day)
• Medium size (M): 150 yen per hour (maximum charge of 1,500 yen per day)
• L size (large): 200 yen per hour (maximum charge of 2,000 yen per day)
• *There is no charge between 24:00 and 6:00, when luggage cannot be loaded or unloaded.

You can access the system by using the QR code on the locker or the “JR East App” and registering as a member for the first time before using the system.

You can also check the availability of coin lockers at major stations on the “To Locca” website and the “JR East App,” so make good use of them.

Notes on using coin lockers at JR Ueno Station

Coin lockers at JR Ueno Station are available from the first train to the last train, except for the Asakusa-guchi coin locker room outside the central ticket gate on the 1st floor, which is open from 6:00 to 24:00.

As of September 2022, the first train leaves at 4:30 and the last train leaves at 0:46!

The maximum usage period is three days, and a daily fee is charged after 2:00 a.m.

To Locca” coin lockers are charged hourly, while hourly coin lockers are charged every 24 hours after the third hour.

Please note that regular coin lockers will be moved to a different location after the fourth day, and “To Locca” and hourly coin lockers will be moved to a different location after 72 hours and stored for 30 days from the date of deposit before being disposed of.

If coin lockers at JR Ueno Station are not available, use coin lockers at Tokyo Metro Ueno Station.
